From Enthusiast to Skilled Photographer
While working in Tasmania in 2015, Robin attempted to capture the glow of the Aurora Australis but quickly realised that her smartphone couldn’t do the breathtaking scene justice. So, she walked into a camera store and bought a new set of tools, opening the door to a world of creative possibilities.
Robin used photography to decompress from a demanding career as a Nurse Midwife. Her work reflects her belief in finding the lighter side of life, and she hopes her images convey the joy and wonder she experiences in nature.
Achievements and Recognition
In 2018, Robin was a finalist in the Sony Alpha Australia Awards in the nature category for her striking photograph of a Eurasian Lynx. Her photography also earned her a Gold Award in the 2018 Better Photography Photo of the Year Awards in the Landscape category. More recently, Robin won the Nature and Wildlife Photographer and Digital Photographer of the Year Award in the Australian Photographic Prize 2023 for her image Morning Flight.
Today, Robin is sponsored by Sony as a Digital Imaging Advocate. In this role, she shares her knowledge and passion for photography while being able to travel and explore the natural world. As an advocate, she not only showcases her work but also helps others explore the limitless possibilities of photography, offering advice, tips, and guidance along the way.
Wildlife of The Mallee
Over the years, Robin has returned again and again to The Mallee region of Victoria, capturing its unique, unspoiled beauty. The Mallee is home to fascinating wildlife, many of which Robin has had the privilege of photographing. In October 2024, Skymirror hosted her exhibition Wildlife of The Mallee, featuring a collection of work taken throughout the region surrounding Lake Tyrrell and Sea Lake. Robin focussed her attention on capturing birdlife native to this area.
One morning, while out on the lake in thick fog, Robin captured a White Egret gliding past in the golden light. It was a moment of quiet grace amidst the ethereal surroundings—both graceful and awkward in its flight, perfectly embodying the beauty of the early morning light.
Rainbow Bee Eaters are migratory visitors to The Mallee. Usually arriving in the warmer months, they catch their insect prey mid-flight with incredible precision. Robin photographed this parent offering food to her chick, who wasn't yet old enough to leave the perch.
Attendees of the exhibition saw a range of birdlife captured in their natural habitat, and these two images are only a fraction of Robin's collection of work. More information about Robin's photography and career can be found on Wanderlust Imagery.
