Introducing Peter Harlow: Aerial Abstract Photography

We are thrilled to announce the latest addition to Skymirror: Peter Harlow, an exceptionally talented Aerial Abstract Photographer whose work captures the beauty and fragility of nature from breathtaking new perspectives.

Tyrrell Cascade

An Award-Winning Photographer

Having started less than three years ago, Peter Harlow’s work has already garnered significant recognition. In 2024, he received second place in the Nature Conservancy Australia Oceania Photo Contest for his image Island Universe. This accolade is just one of many, showing Peter’s ability and skill with the camera. You can see Island Universe and other award-winning images here!

Peter’s images reflect the ever-changing nature shaped by the wind, rain and seasons. His photographic practice represents transformation and captures nature from an aerial perspective, often less than 50 meters above the surface. Each photograph invites the viewer to pause and appreciate the impermanent beauty of nature.

Salt Lakes

The Yellow Emperor

Based in Melbourne, Peter has had the opportunity to capture Lake Tyrrell in a unique manner that highlights its splendour. Tyrrell Cascade was taken in April 2024, after a significant rainfall had altered the typical pink hues of Lake Tyrrell. Peter focused on the dried white salt that appeared to cascade down from the top of the image.

Another striking piece, The Yellow Emperor, features Lake Weering, a salt lake in central Victoria. Lake Weering shows that not all salt lakes are pink, as this image highlights the intensified yellow colour found in the water as it evaporates and recedes. Peter’s ability to find beauty in the unexpected is evident in this image as he pushes the boundaries of abstract photography.

Peter’s works Cloud Illusions and Long Lake Release continue to show the ever-changing colours found in Victorian lakes. Both of these images capture the dreamlike qualities of smaller dried lakebeds. They evoke a sense of mysterious tranquillity with their calming colours and intricate patterns.

Ghosts in the Lake Series

Peter’s project Ghosts in the Lake is a series of three images that depict dry lakes imprinted with obscure patterns due to receding water. These marks create surreal shapes that can be linked to the myths of spirits and ghosts that dwell near large bodies of water. The series is inspired by a water spirit, a supernatural being, found in the folklore of many cultures, including African, Celtic, North American, Greek and Chinese, among others.
